Holiday Deep Clean: Getting Your Home Guest-Ready Before Thanksgiving

Family is coming and every surface is under scrutiny. Here's the professional-grade pre-Thanksgiving cleaning checklist to make your home shine.

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where your home is under a microscope. Family members you haven't seen in months are wandering into rooms you haven't thought about in weeks. The guest bathroom, the guest bedroom, the silverware drawer — everything is suddenly visible and in use. At Hands Down Cleaning Co., November is one of our most requested months for a reason: getting a home guest-ready before Thanksgiving takes real work, and our Harrison, OH clients know it.

Here's the complete professional-grade checklist we use to make homes shine before the holiday gathering.

Start Two Weeks Out: Guest Bathroom First

The guest bathroom is the room your Thanksgiving guests will definitely use, and it's often the one that gets the least attention the rest of the year. Start there, two weeks before the holiday. Give it a complete deep clean: scrub the toilet including behind it and around the base, clean the shower or tub (even if guests won't use it — it smells), scrub grout lines, polish the mirror, and descale the faucet.

Restock with fresh hand soap, a clean hand towel (folded neatly, not stuffed in a ring), and toilet paper with the roll positioned over the top. These tiny hospitality details make guests feel genuinely cared for.

The Kitchen: 10 Days Out

Your kitchen will be fully operational on Thanksgiving Day, so deep clean it about 10 days before. Clean inside the oven now — not the day before, when you'll need it. Wipe down cabinet fronts, degrease the range hood filter, clean the inside of the microwave, and scrub the stovetop grates. Polish any stainless steel appliances.

Clear and wipe down all countertops and clean the sink thoroughly. On Thanksgiving morning, do a quick wipe-down of the surfaces you'll use, but the heavy work should already be done.

High-Touch Surfaces: Sanitize Everything

Before guests arrive, go through every room and sanitize all high-touch surfaces: door handles, light switches, cabinet pulls, drawer handles, toilet flush handles, and faucet handles. These surfaces transfer bacteria constantly and almost never get cleaned during routine tidying. A disinfecting wipe over each one takes minutes and makes a significant hygiene difference, especially during cold and flu season.

Guest Bedroom: The Full Treatment

If you have a guest room, wash all bedding including the mattress pad. Dust every surface, including the top of the dresser and nightstand. Vacuum the floor and under the bed. Add a small touch — a glass of water, an extra blanket, a fresh towel folded at the foot of the bed. Your guests will notice and remember the thoughtfulness.

Even if no one is sleeping over, having a clean guest room matters because family members will inevitably wander in.

Living and Dining Areas: The Stage for Your Gathering

Vacuum all upholstered furniture and the rug or carpet thoroughly. Wipe down all hard surfaces — coffee tables, side tables, entertainment centers, dining table and chairs. Polish wood if needed. Clean any glass surfaces until streak-free. Fluff and arrange throw pillows intentionally.

In the dining room, deep clean under the table and chairs (this area gets surprisingly dirty), polish the dining table, and clean the windows nearby if the natural light will be a feature of your gathering.

Floors: The Foundation of Clean

Clean floors make or break the feeling of a clean home. Sweep and mop all hard floors two days before, then sweep again the morning of the event. Vacuum all carpeted areas. If any area rugs look tired, now is the time for a professional rug clean or a carpet shampoo.

Pay special attention to entry areas — this is where outdoor dirt comes in. Put out a quality entry mat and keep it clean throughout the gathering.

The Day Before: Quick Final Walkthrough

The day before Thanksgiving, do a 30-minute final walkthrough: wipe down bathrooms again, empty all trash cans, take out the garbage, vacuum high-traffic floors, and light a subtle candle or diffuser. Set the table completely so you're not scrambling in the morning.
