End-of-Year Deep Clean: Start the New Year Fresh With a Spotless Home
Before you pop the champagne, give your home the reset it deserves. Our end-of-year cleaning checklist covers every inch — from behind the fridge to inside the oven.
December is a month of celebration — holiday parties, family gatherings, cozy evenings at home. But before all of that, there's something incredibly satisfying about closing out the year with a home that is completely clean from top to bottom. An end-of-year deep clean isn't just tidying up. It's a true reset: clearing the grime, clutter, and neglected corners that accumulated over 12 months of real life.
At Hands Down Cleaning Co., December is our busiest month for a reason. Harrison, OH families trust us every year to get their homes spotless before guests arrive and the new year begins. Here's exactly what a proper end-of-year deep clean should include.
Behind and Beneath Every Appliance
The areas you never see are usually the dirtiest. Pull out your refrigerator and clean the coils and the floor beneath it — this alone can improve your fridge's energy efficiency by up to 15%. Pull out the stove and clean behind it. Move the washing machine and dryer, clean the lint buildup from the dryer vent (a fire hazard if left unchecked), and sweep behind both units.
These are tasks that most people never do — and that's exactly why they belong in an end-of-year deep clean.
Full Oven and Range Deep Clean
Between Thanksgiving leftovers and holiday baking, your oven takes a serious beating in November and December. Run a self-clean cycle if your oven has one, then wipe out the ash residue thoroughly. Remove the oven racks and soak them in hot, soapy water. Clean the range hood filter — it accumulates grease that can become a fire risk and also affects how well your range exhaust works.
A truly clean oven not only looks better; it also cooks more efficiently and won't fill your home with the smell of baked-on residue.
Every Window, Inside and Out
Clean windows are transformational. Even in December, mild Ohio days make it possible to clean exterior windows. Streak-free glass on every window in your home makes natural light cleaner, brighter, and more uplifting — especially during the shorter winter days. Use a squeegee and glass cleaner for best results, and wipe window tracks and sills while you're at it.
Deep Bathroom Clean: Beyond the Surface
A deep clean bathroom goes far beyond spraying and wiping. Recaulk around the tub or shower if you see any discoloration, mold, or gaps. Descale the showerhead, toilet flush valve, and faucet aerators — mineral buildup from Ohio water is real and affects water pressure over time. Wash or replace the shower curtain liner. Scrub grout lines in tile floors and walls.
Clean exhaust fans by removing the cover and vacuuming or washing the blades — dusty exhaust fans are incredibly common and significantly reduce air quality in bathrooms.
Bedroom Deep Clean: Mattress, Curtains, and Everything Else
Flip or rotate your mattress and vacuum it before putting on fresh bedding. Wash all bedding — including the duvet insert if possible. Take down curtains and run them through a gentle wash cycle or at least put them in the dryer on air-only to remove dust. Vacuum behind furniture, clean baseboards, and wipe down all surfaces including the tops of doors and the frames of mirrors.
Living Areas: Forgotten Surfaces
Vacuum or clean sofa and chair upholstery thoroughly. Remove all cushions and vacuum underneath them. Clean behind entertainment centers and bookshelves. Wipe down all baseboards in living areas — they accumulate dust and pet hair over the year. Polish wood furniture, sanitize remote controls and electronics, and clean light fixtures and lampshades.
If you have area rugs, this is the time for a professional rug cleaning or a deep shampoo treatment.
Don't Forget the Entry, Garage, and Laundry Room
These utilitarian spaces get overlooked but accumulate grime quickly. Sweep and mop the garage floor, organize stored holiday items, and wipe down the washer and dryer interior. Run a hot cycle with a washer cleaning tablet in the washing machine. Clean the dryer drum with a damp cloth and check the exterior vent exit for lint blockage.
